What the NAICS codes mean

Every federal contract notice carries a NAICS code, and the SAM.gov extract publishes the number without the name. This is the name — the North American Industry Classification System title for each code the federal market is currently buying under, grouped by sector.

The code also decides whether you count as a small business: SBA sets a size standard per code, so the same company can be small for one line of work and not for another. See the FAQ for how that works.

The whole market, every agency buying, or where the work is.

153 codes across 14 sectors have enough open work to have a page of their own. Everything else in the taxonomy is omitted rather than listed empty.
